New Mental Health Support Group for 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth Launches in Delta

Mental health challenges disproportionately affect 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, who face significantly higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation than their peers. Recognizing this critical need, the Step Forward Health Society recently launched a dedicated mental health support group for queer youth in Delta. This initiative was highlighted in a recent article by the Delta Optimist.

Why this support matters

Research has repeatedly shown that 2SLGBTQIA+ youth face unique mental health challenges due to societal stigma, discrimination, and a lack of accessible services. According to The Trevor Project, nearly half of queer youth have seriously considered suicide, with one in five having attempted it. Even more troubling, many report significant barriers in accessing critical mental health care.

Recognizing this, Step Forward Health Society aims to bridge these gaps. As president Meg Neufeld shared with the Delta Optimist, “These youth are an important part of our community, and we recognize the gap in supports available to them. Our goal is to co-create this support group alongside its members, ensuring it meets their needs through ongoing feedback and collaboration.”

A community-focused approach

Step Forward Health Society has partnered with Alongside You, a trusted local mental health clinic to deliver this essential service. Fiona Scott, a Registered Clinical Counsellor with Alongside You, will facilitate the group. Scott brings not only professional expertise but also personal passion, identifying as a member of the queer community and maintaining close ties to the trans community.

“This mental health support group for queer youth is something I care about on both a professional and personal level,” Scott emphasized. “The most effective support groups are those shaped by the people they serve. My role is to guide the process, ensuring that everyone feels safe, respected, and heard.”

Who can join?

This new support group is open to any 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in grades 8 to 12 looking for a welcoming and affirming community space where they can access mental health support, peer connections, and validation. Registration is now open, and importantly, participation is free, removing financial barriers that often prevent youth from seeking help.

Step Forward’s ongoing commitment

The launch of this group highlights Step Forward Health Society’s broader mission to reduce barriers to mental health services. The society continues to introduce inclusive programs that ensure no one in Delta is left behind in accessing mental health care—especially those from historically marginalized communities.
